At work, a few of us have this motto, “Lunch is for Punks.” Sometimes, I actually believe it. #SignsofaWorkaholic #TheWorkloadisReal! #AintNobodyGotTimetoSnack!
I just hashtaged my blog. #shameful
Now, I don’t literally believe that lunch is for punks, but I do believe there is a consistent thread of cowardice amongst the church (including myself), absolutely qualifying us for the term “punks.”
The definition of “punk” is simply, a worthless person. Am I saying we’re worthless? Absolutely not. However, I do think we act worthless sometimes.
Sometimes I hear God tell me to do something, or I see a situation and think “if only they knew Jesus,” but then I walk away without any action, disobeying God’s prompting and leaving that situation unaffected.
How wack? What good did I bring? What gospel did I live?
What would happen if believers got bold?
I wish I could hear your answers before I go any further, but since I can’t, I’ll share what I first thought.
If believers got bold, I thought:
- There wouldn’t be so much compromise in the world
- Christian values would still be respected in our country
- Gay marriage wouldn’t be legalized
- The church & Christians would be respected more
- Jesus would be better represented
But here’s what I discovered from a biblical perspective. If believers got bold there would be more miracles, signs, and wonders.
Here are just a few instances you can check out:
Acts 4:13 – there was a healing, people were astonished
Acts 14:3 – miraculous signs and wonders
Ephesians 6:19 – the gospel was proclaimed
Now one thing to note is that every instance where boldness occurs, there isn’t always just good and amazing things happening. There is often times persecution, threats, offense, and anger.
But peep this, in every instance, those being threatened, jailed, persecuted and straight up disrespected, did not back down in their boldness. Instead they found joy, hope, and the strength to persevere.
2 Corinthians 3:12 – Since we have such a hope, we are very bold
2 Corinthians 7:4 – I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. In all our affliction, I am overflowing with joy.
And THAT my friends, is what makes the Kingdom of God unstoppable.
When we realize we have absolutely nothing to loose and when begin to act like we have everything to gain, we will find the courage and the boldness to:
- confidently make our requests known to God
- share the gospel with strangers
- proclaim the gospel boldly, and
- expect and actually see miracles and wonders
So what is keeping you from boldly living out your faith? Lets choose to push past our insecurities, fears and concerns of other’s perceptions, and be the church we are empowered and equipped to be.
“The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” -Proverbs 28:1
Today, lets choose to take just one bold action and see what miracle is waiting on the other side.
My prayer for us today:
Father thank you for the confidence you’ve granted us through your son’s amazing and finished work on the cross. Thank you for entrusting us to be carriers your power. Grant us the boldness to act on the unfailing power that lives in us.
The power that raised Christ from the grave, the power that causes billions of people’s hearts to beat constantly everyday, the power that keeps the earth, moon, and stars in place…THAT is the power within us your people, so today as we meet strangers, and you prompt us to do something a bit out of our comfort zones, and as you call us to be a light to someone in need of your love, give us the boldness and confidence to obey.
“And now, Lord, look upon [our] threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” Acts 4:29-30
We believe you. We trust you. And we will live for you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
I would love to hear from you! What has been keep you from believing and living boldly? What bold step did you decide to take today?
